Overview
Making your own cosmetics is a great hobby that can be a lot of fun. Many of the cosmetic recipes are extremely easy to follow. Once you get the hang of the process, you will be able to make all of your own makeup in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Making your own cosmetics is also a fun project to do with friends and family.
Step 1
Purchase makeup-making supplies. You will need fragrance oils, binders, essential oils, pigments, flavor oils, pre-made bases (unscented lotions and creams), earth-based minerals (e.g. mica and herbs), base oils, butters, waxes, bottles, jars, spatulas and more. These products must be purchased from a makeup supplier.
Step 2
Find some makeup recipes to start with, which you can find on websites or in books. It's best to start with an easy recipe, like lip balm or eyeshadow, which only requires a few ingredients.
Step 3
Follow the instructions for each recipe very carefully. Take all necessary precautions for recipes that require heating and melting. Begin with recipes that have a low level of difficulty before you move on to making more difficult items.
Step 4
Make some pressed eyeshadow. You will need half a teaspoon of mica in the color of your choice, a quarter teaspoon of powder base and a spray binder. Mix the powder base and mica together. You can put the ingredients in a sandwich bag and crush any lumps. Blend until the color is uniform and pour into a container. Spray the mixture with the binder and blend. Use the back of a metal spoon to pack it tight.
Step 5
Make some foundation. You will need a 2 tablespoons of cream base and 1 teaspoon of mica powder that best matches your skin color. (You may need to blend a few different pigments together until you get a good match.) Blend the cream base and mica powder in a plastic bowl until the mixture is uniform. Make sure to crush any lumps. Store in a glass jar for future use.
Step 6
Make some lip gloss. You will need a teaspoon of beeswax or paraffin wax, one drop of essential oil (e.g. vanilla or peppermint)., and a half teaspoon of powdered pigment in a color of your choice. Combine the ingredients in a plastic bowl and place in hot water until the wax and pigment have melted. Microwave the ingredients for about 30 seconds and blend well. Pour the mixture in a plastic container and allow to cool before use.
